PR-2021-20

Toronto, 04 June 2021 –Consul General Orontes V. Castro met virtually on 03 June 2021 with Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB) Chair of the Board of Trustees Sharon Hobin and Vice Chair and Filipino Canadian Trustee Luz del Rosario.

Consul General Castro organized the zoom meeting to thank the two top officials of the Board for approving the request of Sentro Rizal of the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto for the passing of a Proclamation declaring June of every year as Filipino Heritage Month in all schools under the DPCDSB.

Both parties expressed their happiness to be able to celebrate the whole month of June 2021 as Filipino Heritage Month despite the restrictions in place in the Province of Ontario due to the pandemic. Chair Hobin informed Consul General Castro that they will have the very first celebration of Filipino Heritage Month at the DPCDSB on 11 June 2021 with the Raising of the Philippine flag in its headquarters in Mississauga, but with limited people in attendance to comply with current health protocols still in place in the Province. The maiden FHM celebration at the DPCDSB will be recorded and live-streamed so students and parents can watch the ceremonies. Chair Hobin personally invited ConGen Castro to join in the flag-raising next week.

It is significant to note that the eleven (11) Members Board of Trustees was able to approve the Proclamation in time for this year’s Filipino Heritage Month celebration, which already started on 1 June 2021.

The DPCDSB is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in Ontario with approximately 80,000 students attending 151 schools (125 elementary and 26 secondary) located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, and Orangeville. – END
